An Introduction to Treehouse Software, Inc.

Since its establishment in 1982, Treehouse Software, Inc. (TSI) has garnered an excellent reputation as a leader in systems software development and marketing, with approximately 700 customers in the U.S. and dozens of other countries. In addition, TSI provides training and consulting services and maintains a full enterprise support infrastructure for customers worldwide.

Company Focus

Traditionally, TSI has focused on software that was complementary to the Software AG mainframe product line (ADABAS database management system and NATURAL programming language) in the areas of security, control, auditing, performance enhancement, etc.

The primary TSI focus today is new software and services that enable mainframe customers to leverage their investment in legacy systems with data integration, data warehousing, modernization and conversion, Service-Oriented Architectures, and other new technologies.

The Market

TSI markets primarily to the 10,000 IBM mainframe sites worldwide, with particular focus on the 2,500 organizations using ADABAS and NATURAL, 500 of these being in North America.
Most mainframe users face critical data management challenges due to the complexity and proprietary nature of ADABAS and other databases. TSI meets the needs of these customers through a comprehensive and robust set of products—with supporting services—to enable standards-based access to, and replication and integration of, mainframe data sources throughout the technology architecture. The company’s visionary leadership in this market has included pioneering ADABAS-to-RDBMS ETL (extract-transform-load) and CDC (change data capture) with tRelational/DPS in the mid-1990s, introduction of the first ADABAS XML gateway in the early 2000s with DPS X-Link and launching of the era of real-time ADABAS-to-RDBMS replication with DPSync in 2004. Today, TSI stands alone in its product maturity, capability and breadth of product portfolio. Despite the rapid pace of change in the IT landscape, TSI’s customer base can be assured that there remains a strong commitment to providing continued support and upgrades for the product suite.

The increasing demand for mainframe application modernization and migration—particularly in the Software AG customer arena—has enabled TSI to position itself as an important contributor to such initiatives. TSI’s long experience, deep knowledge and wide-ranging capabilities in ADABAS/NATURAL and other mainframe technologies make the company a valued partner for third-party solution providers and a trusted advisor to customers.

Finally, for customers and service providers struggling with a shortage of mainframe-skilled resources and rapidly-changing IT environments, TSI offers staff augmentation and outsourcing services for technical roles.

Value Proposition for Data Migration, Replication and Integration

What TSI Offers
Treehouse Software, Inc. (TSI) offers a comprehensive suite of robust, proven technologies and approaches for data replication, migration and integration to support and enable any project–from application integration to modernization–requiring data movement, migration or synchronization between mainframe sources and Open Systems or Windows.

To extend its reach to mainframe data sources such as VSAM, IMS, IDMS, DB2 and even sequential files, TSI teams with B.O.S. Software Service und Vertrieb GmbH of Haar, Germany, to distribute and support B.O.S.'s tcVISION and tcACCESS, mainframe data replication and data access products. These offerings provide the ability to deliver anywhere-to-anywhere data replication and integration, as well as direct SQL-based access to non-relational mainframe data structures.

The tcVISION solution focuses on changed data capture when transferring information between mainframe data sources and Windows or open-systems databases and applications. Through an innovative technology, changes occurring in any mainframe application data are tracked and captured, and then published to a variety of RDBMS and other targets. tcVISION's capture facilities detect changes in mainframe data sources without programming effort, and reduce the amount of data that must be transferred between systems to an absolute minimum. tcVISION guarantees transparent, efficient and auditable data transfer between sources and targets, and provides powerful routines to perform efficient, reliable bulk transfers of data.

tcACCESS is comprehensive software solution that enables two-way integration between IBM mainframe systems and client/server, Web and SOA technologies–without the need for mainframe knowledge or programming effort. tcACCESS is a proven platform that facilitates SQL-based integration of mainframe data sources and programs into open-systems and Windows applications using industry standards such as SQL, ODBC, JDBC, and .NET. SQL queries to access mainframe data can be easily created using drag and drop techniques—no programming required. The results of queries can be immediately presented and viewed (i.e., in Excel, Microsoft Access, etc.). Direct ODBC or JDBC access to mainframe data from any client/server or Web application can be easily implemented; it is necessary only to assign the tcACCESS driver to the application.

In addition to the mainframe sources cited above, the tRelational, DPS and DPSync products are TSI’s best-of-breed tools designed to replicate data from Software AG’s ADABAS database to RDBMS applications, including native target support for Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, Sybase and Teradata databases.

tRelational provides complete analysis, modeling and mapping of ADABAS files and data elements to the target RDBMS tables and columns. DPS (Data Propagation System) performs Extract, Transformation, and Load (ETL) functions for the initial bulk RDBMS load and incremental Change Data Capture (CDC) batch processing to synchronize ADABAS updates with the target RDBMS.

DPSync enables highly-efficient, fault-tolerant, real-time ADABAS-to-RDBMS CDC, delivering immediate access to updates without impacting ADABAS performance. In contrast to competitors, DPSync is an out-of-the-box, fast and comprehensive solution for native, real-time transformation and propagation of ADABAS data to RDBMSs.

To complement these products, TSI offers highly-skilled consultants experienced in large-scale, mission-critical migration and replication projects.

TSI as a Value-Added Partner
TSI has proven its ability to partner and work effectively as part of a larger team to solve client problems. Microsoft Corporation, Oracle Corporation and other large vendors have selected our technology for their data migration and application modernization practices.

TSI’s software products are installed in the largest of mainframe sites around the world. Mature, robust and reliable, these products are also backed by our highly-rated 7x24 technical support.

The products have been used for data migration in more than 70 client sites for application conversions or data warehouse development. They are selected when there are requirements for transferring large amounts of data with minimal CPU resource usage, when complicated transformations are required between the proprietary legacy structures and normalized RDBMS structures, or when synchronization is required between old and new applications.

TSI consultants average more than 20 years experience working with legacy mainframe databases, and have a high level of knowledge of relational databases and other common targets.

Offering flexible terms, TSI’s solutions may be structured in a variety of ways to best meet project and partner objectives, ranging from outright license purchase or monthly rentals of the tools to service engagements.

Summary
With unmatched comprehensiveness of tools and depth of experience, Treehouse Software applies proven approaches to help customers and partners mitigate risk and profit sooner from modernization benefits.

TSI provides tools and expertise for the riskiest and most-often overlooked parts of mainframe migration and integration projects—the data migration and integration. Using TSI products and services eliminates reliance on end-customer programming staff to write and maintain data extracts and middleware, yet enables deployment of powerful, robust and secure data migration and replication implementations.

The company has long been the acknowledged premier provider of ADABAS migration solutions, and now offers solutions for all mainframe data migration and integration requirements.

TSI’s specialized strengths provide benefits in reducing project risk, speeding project delivery and ROI, increasing project profitability, and increasing implementation flexibility.
