In a year 2000 effort, Miami recently transferred all of its administrative systems from Cobol and Natural on MVS, to Oracle on UNIX. Faced with the demands of converting payroll, accounting, student records, bursar, admission, financial aid and university relations to Oracle, all in 1999, Miami turned to Treehouse for assistance in the data conversion effort.
Knowing of Treehouse’s reputation for excellent tools, formalized methods, and years of experience in the Adabas / Natural community, we enlisted them to convert our Adabas payroll and university relations data. In all, some 40 Adabas files with 6.5 million records were normalized and transferred into 120 Oracle tables with 15.9 million records. Treehouse handled all tasks in the conversion including data analysis, materialization on the MVS platform, data transfer and Oracle import on UNIX AIX. Treehouse accomplished the work on time within the terms of the contract; also going beyond the letter of our contract, to accommodate Miami’s shifting schedule. Without the services of Treehouse we would not have met our deadline. After receiving the converted data from Treehouse, Miami staff wrote further conversion routines to crosswalk the data into the format of our new application software vendor, SCT. The final test of any data conversion is that data be used in a production environment. Miami is currently using the product of the Treehouse conversion in our production environment. Treehouse converted the data accurately. As a former Data Base Administrator, I recognize the importance of a formal methodology to assure accuracy and consistency of data transformations.
