application-builder is a key component in the maxenso approach. Using application-builder, developers model business requirements without the need for detailed knowledge or specification of a particular programming language or technology. The model describes the application, its user interface and much more, encouraging close collaboration and rapid prototyping between IT and business users.

In the case of the user interface, be it rich client or Web client, application-builder generates it automatically from the model, and allows the choice of implementation technology from among a wide variety of standards-based candidates, including Java/Swing, Java/HTML, Google AJAX API, Google Maps, Flash, etc. Moreover, when new candidate technologies emerge, the abstraction of the presentation and control requirements into a model means that these new technologies can be immediately adopted with no disruption to the application’s business and data access logic. Furthermore, support for other implementations such as mobile devices is provided with no reprogramming.

This approach promotes productivity and avoids technology lock-in and future maintenance issues, in contrast to approaches where a specific technology such as AJAX gets embedded directly into application programs using non-standard programming.

The maxenso methodology provides for easy deployment and seamless refactoring of NATURAL applications to use the new user interface in a loosely-coupled manner, providing a more robust application structure isolating business, persistence and database logic independent from the user interface, and facilitating objects being deployed as services (SOA enablement). This enhances application maintainability and positions it for further evolution and modernization.
